B
efore You Start

In preparation for your first visit, you should consider the primary
reason(s) for your visit. For example, are you simply interviewing a particular lawyer and law firm or has that decision now been made and you and wish to determine the best route to take and proceed with representation? In any case, you should organize your thoughts, make notes on any questions, and have your plans and documents put in chronological order. This provides for greater clarity and understanding of expectations for both you and your lawyer right from the start. Communication is always critical but especially in the beginning!

Remember, you are about to place your goals in the hands of a professional and chances are a new or clearer picture may appear. Some flexibility may be required and goals may need adjusting. (That could just as well mean upwards!) Consider this relationship over a long run as well as the short term. Is it cost effective? Will there be future and ongoing needs? A senior lawyer may initially appear to charge a higher hourly amount but then consider the quality of the effort and the ability to get to the core of the problem quickly. Please remember that it may not always be reasonable to predetermine a time frame and cost to each project. There can be undetermined variables. The good news is an experienced lawyer adjusts for that.

Whether you are seeking a simple will or the creation of a complicated transaction, chances are that there will be more than one chapter to the problem. When choosing your lawyer you should consider it part of a longer journey. Nisson Goldman takes pride in representation from start to finish!
